Trapeze Artists

Scripture reading

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; in you I trust, O my God.
–Psalm 25:1

Thought of the Day

In his book, Sabbatical Journey, Henri Nouwen writes about his keen interest in the circus and in particular, a family of trapeze artists. He became friends with the Flying Rodleighs. He admired the skill in which they gracefully performed high in the air, along with the trust and warmth of their community of artists. He explained the special relationship between the flyer and the catcher. The flyer swings high above the crowd and simply lets go of the trapeze while stretching out his arms and waiting calmly for the catcher to grab him and bring him to safety. The flyer cannot catch the catcher. He must wait in absolute trust.
Now I am sure that the Psalmist who wrote our scripture for today was not a trapeze artist, but he did understand how God reaches down with His strong arms and “catches” us, if only we will trust in Him.

Prayer

Almighty God, I will trust in You. Amen.
