The Ordinary

Scripture reading

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

–John 13:34

Thought of the Day

Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the amazing musician, New Testament Scholar, medical missionary, and Nobel Peace Prize Winner understood our mission as followers of Jesus Christ better than almost anyone. In his sermon on Reverence for Life in 1919 he talked about the things Jesus demands of us. This is what he said,

“The demands of Jesus are difficult just because they require us to do something extraordinary. At the same time He asks us to regard these as something usual, ordinary.”

What amazing words. I know at times, I wonder if Christ set the bar too high for us. I wonder if Jesus really knew how extraordinary He was here on earth. Dr. Schweitzer figured it out. What we think is almost impossible, Jesus considers ordinary. The answer of course is that with Christ, things become possible. With Jesus, loving others becomes easier. It can become the usual.

Prayer

Jesus, Be in me, be with me, be a part of me. Amen.
