Pure Love

Scripture reading

Love one another deeply, from the heart.

–1 Peter 1:22

Thought of the Day

Pitirim Sorokin as a young man, witnessed the heartache of the Russian Revolution. He escaped when the Communists came into power and came to the United States, eventually becoming chairman of the Sociology Department at Harvard University.
He wrote, “When all is said and done, the great need of the world is not more powerful armaments or even better communication. It is not to bring about zero population growth, or more food for the world. It is to begin to love each other with a simple but pure love that inevitably puts the welfare of the other first, whether it be a member of your family or the most insignificant person anywhere.” I don’t know Dr. Sorokin, but I have to know that he included in his thoughts even those who might be our enemy.
It is hard to imagine that it has been a year since the events of September 11, 2001. There has been such an outpouring of love since that horrible day. Has there has been enough love or for that matter, is there ever enough love out there in the world?
As we make it through the next few days, please pray for that pure love Pitirim Sorokin dreamed of. Pray for those in harm’s way. Pray for those that mourn. Pray for that love, that puts the welfare of others first, to begin in you today.

Prayer

God of us all, Help us to trust in You and to love as You love. Amen.
