Scripture reading
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
–1 Peter 5:4
Thought of the Day
I know you are familiar with the term, “One Hit Wonders”. In case you are not, it is not a baseball or boxing term. It refers to musical groups or musicians that only have one song that “made it”. They are known for just one song. Did you know that there are Internet radio stations where you can choose to listen to all one hit wonder songs. How great would that be? You never have to worry about hearing a bad song.
I’m sure you know of George Bennard. He is the granddaddy of one hit wonders. He wrote his in 1912. Did I tell you George was a minister? Any luck yet on figuring out his one hit wonder? A guy named Charles Gabriel, helped old George fine tune the melody. Still don’t have it. OK, here it is:
On a hill far away, stood an old rugged cross.
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love the old cross where the dearest and best,
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.
This was George’s finest and only “hit”. The Old Rugged Cross. Not bad. Not bad.
Prayer
Lord, Your crown makes me whole. Amen.
