Oil of Nard

Scripture reading

When Jesus was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of a very expensive perfume made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on His head.

–Mark 14:3

Thought of the Day

This is one of my most favorite stories in the Gospels. I love it because it helps me to remember that Christ deserves my most prized possession. Certainly the jar of oil of nard was that to the woman in the story. I recently read a devotional in The Upper Room that talked about this particular scripture. In it the author focused on the fact that the woman broke the jar to anoint Christ. That simple image conveys so much. When she broke the jar she knew there was no turning back. She knew that she could not just give part of the gift; she had to give it all.
This week as we remember and celebrate Holy Week as we approach Easter I hope that this story will become real and important to you. I hope that you will figure out what is your most prized possession. I hope that you will decide to be like the woman and give it to Christ. Be careful when you break your jar.

Prayer

Lord, I am Yours. Amen.
