Indicators

Scripture reading

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
–Galatians 6:2

Thought of the Day

This past week, I drove a van to College Station for the Primetimers of the church on one of their “field trips”. This group of senior citizens does all kinds of fun trips and excursions. This trip was to the Bush Presidential Library, lunch at the Country Buffet, and then a tour of a winery in Bryan. The winery tour was pretty interesting. We got to go behind the scenes and see and hear how wine is made, from seeing the vines to filling the bottles. As we began the tour in the vineyard, our guide pointed out the rose bushes that were planted at the end of each row of grapes. She said that they were not just there to look pretty. They had a greater purpose. You see, these rose bushes were “indicators”, she said. The roses are planted next to the grapes because they are able to “indicate” diseases that might affect the crop. Growers know that diseases will show up on the rose bushes one to two weeks before they infect the grapevines. The grapevines can then be protected from those diseases before they cause damage to the grapes. Pretty smart, huh? I thought so, too.
As I thought about these rose bushes I thought of our scripture for today. I know that we all have people in our lives that need us to help carry their burden. I know that we all have people in our lives that we need to “protect”. So do it out of love. Do it because Christ first did it for you.

Prayer

Creator of all, Help me reach out to others as you reached out to me. Amen.
