Hazardous Journey

Scripture reading

The Lord your God has blessed you in the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast desert. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.
–Deuteronomy 2:7

Thought of the Day

I recently read an article about Sir Ernest Shackleton, the famous explorer of the South Pole. To recruit men for the expedition, Shackleton wrote the following advertisement that appeared in a London newspaper earlier this century. It read, “Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful.”
Sound enticing? Believe it or not, it was a most effective ad. The response was amazing. Shackleton said, “It seemed as though all the men in Great Britain were determined to accompany us.”
I’m not sure that I would have jumped at the opportunity to journey to the South Pole with Sir Ernest. It sounded a little dangerous. I wonder how the ad might read to invite us to go on the journey of faith. If I was writing it, I think I would for sure include the words of our scripture for today. Pretty comforting words to read that God blesses us, and watches over us, and will be with us, and will provide everything we need. Ready to sign up?

Prayer

Lord, Thank you for all you do to watch over my journey to You. Amen.
