Great Questions

Scripture reading

And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

–1 John 3:22

Thought of the Day

Henri Nouwen was an amazing spiritual writer and theologian. His last book, “Sabbatical Journey” was a daily journal of the last year of his life. When he wrote it, he did not know it would be his last body of work. It is a great book. Reading it, gives you an intimate look at Nouwen’s love of life and his daily goal to commune with and experience God. This passage in the book grabbed me in a special way.

“Only one thing seems clear to me. Every day should be well lived. What a simple truth! Still, it is worth my attention. Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentments? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions! I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow will bear many fruits, here in this world and in the life to come.”

There are great questions? Too often we end our days with other “pressing” questions concerning stuff that we needed to do and didn’t. What if we ended each day with the questions that Henri Nouwen asked? What if we began each day by figuring out how we will offer peace? How will we say words of healing today? Who will we forgive today? How will we show love today? Pretty good questions.

Prayer

Lord of Love, Help me to ask the right questions. Amen.
