Scripture reading
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
–Galatians 5:22-23
Thought of the Day
I have always liked Paul’s words about the fruits of the Spirit. Yesterday, I liked hearing my friend, Brother Elmo’s words about the fruits and vegetables of the Spirit. Let me explain. A bunch of our college guys and girls spent a day having fun yesterday. We started by going over to the Farmer’s Market and dividing into groups of five. I gave each group twenty dollars to spend. We invaded the market and in just under an hour, everyone returned with armfuls of fruits and vegetables. It is amazing how far a hundred dollars can go over there. The fruits and vegetables filled the floor in the front of the mini-bus. We delivered the fresh goods, to the 4th Ward, to the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church. We filled up the front pew of the tiny church and then gathered for a few moments to hear Brother Elmo talk about how this was truly the fruits of the Spirit. The food will be handed out to the senior citizens in the neighborhood and to many of the large families that live in the area. We sang an old Gospel hymn and said a prayer and then we loaded up to go on our way.
As I looked at the faces of our college crowd as they sat there in that little sanctuary I could see that they perhaps understood Paul’s words perfectly. Their actions made his words real. So how about you? What have you done today, to make the scriptures come alive in your life or someone else’s?
Prayer
Father, Your Word shows me how to love and how to live. Amen.
