Faith in Doubt

Scripture reading

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

–Hebrews 10:23

Thought of the Day

I am reading a great book by Philip Yancey. “The Bible Jesus Read”. In it he writes about the Old Testament being “God’s biography, the story of His passionate encounters with people”. There is a chapter on the book of Job. Now if you are like me, God’s encounter with Job is difficult to understand. It is hard to imagine why all those bad things happened to Job, a man who in God’s words was “blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil”. Mr. Yancey does a great job of reminding us that Job is a lesson on faith, not suffering.
There is a great quote in this chapter from William Safire about the book of Job. He said, ‘I started by journey into this book with doubts in my faith and have come out with faith in my doubt”. Isn’t that awesome? I think we all have some questions sometimes that dog us about how we fit into God’s plan and about things that happen in the world. How cool would it be if we would go to the Bible and stay in it until we come out with “faith in our doubt”? Try it.

Prayer

Lord of us all, You are a God who is faithful. Thanks be for that. Amen.
