Elisha Gray

Scripture reading

I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.
–Philippians 4:10

Thought of the Day

In the grand scheme of things, three hours is not very long. That is unless you are Elisha Gray, or maybe I should say, were Elisha Gray. If only Mr. Gray had hurried a bit or moved a little faster things would have been way different for him and those around him. Do you want to know why? Well, you see, back on March 7, 1876 Elisha Gray submitted his brilliant idea to the U.S. Patent office. His invention was one that could change the world. His plan was one that could have made his name a household one even today. There was only one problem though. Elisha Gray was three hours late. Another man with the same idea and the same invention had been awarded patent # 174,465 earlier that day. Because Elisha Gray was late, he missed the opportunity to be known as the inventor of the telephone. Instead that honor and prestige went to Alexander Graham Bell. Wow, talk about a missed opportunity!
In our scripture for today, Paul rejoices with the church in Philippi because he knew that they cared for him, they just hadn’t had the opportunity to show it. If you are like me, there are probably some people in your life that you could say the same thing about. Someone who you care about that you haven’t had the opportunity lately to tell or show them. Don’t be like Elisha Gray. Why don’t you take that opportunity right now? Don’t wait!

Prayer

Lord, Let me never miss the opportunity to turn towards you. Amen.
