Scripture reading
You are the children of the Lord your God.
–Deuteronomy 14:1a
Thought of the Day
Last night I was most fortunate to hear Marian Wright Edelman speak. Dr. Edelman is the founder and President of the Children’s Defense Fund. She has been an advocate for the disadvantaged her whole life. After she spoke, there was a panel of students who asked her some questions. One was about her life and what steps she had taken when faced with adversity. Dr. Edelman related that by being born black and poor in the South, she had faced adversity from an early age. She said that she was taught from the beginning that she was a “child of God”, and that nothing could ever change that. She went on to say that she was also taught that others were also “children of God” and that she needed to treat them that way. With that strong foundation, she said that problems were never as big as she thought they were.
As I heard her words, I realized how awesome her words were. Dr. Edelman had turned her stumbling blocks into stepping-stones. She did it by knowing that we are all children of God. Do you need some reminding of that fact?
Prayer
Father God, I am glad I am one of Your own. Amen.
