Scripture Reading
We took sweet counsel together and walked unto the house of the Lord in company.
Psalm 55:14
Thought of the Day
I looked at my watch and realized that it was July. Not exactly keeping up with what date it is nowadays. I kind of know what day it is. I hope you are keeping safe and sound. Houston is going crazy now, so we are pretty much hunkered down. I hope you are able to do the same. I keep telling myself. One day. One day.
A long while back, I was at my doctor’s office and caught up on my reading of old Reader’s Digest magazines. Does Reader’s Digest still exist? (I guess as long as there are doctor’s offices it might.) This story was in one of them. It is about the train in Mumbai, India. If you are late for work and you reach the station just as the train is leaving the platform, don’t despair. You can run up to the packed compartments and reach out and instantly many hands will reach back to grab you and pull you on board. Even though it will be packed tighter than cattle in a car, and the heat and sweat is ever present, it doesn’t matter. Those on-board care not. They just know that you want to or need to get on that train, so they reach out. At the moment of contact, it does not matter if the hand reaching for theirs belongs to a Hindu, or Muslin, or a Christian, or a Brahmin, or even an Untouchable, they still reach out their hand. “Come on board,” they say, “we’ll adjust.” I love that phrase. “We’ll adjust.”
Since the middle of March or so, we have all had to re-adjust. This virus has changed our lives. It has made us stay at home more. It has changed how we get our groceries. It has changed how we stay in contact with our friends and family. It has changed how we “church.” It has caused us to “adjust.”
Maybe what the world needs a little more of is for us to reach out to others with love. Maybe we need to help those who need our help the very most. Maybe we need to do all we can to make sure all people everywhere are treated justly and as equals. Maybe, just maybe, we need to open our hearts and see others as Christ sees them and take sweet counsel together and walk into the house of the Lord.
Prayer
Lord, Open up my heart today and help me adjust to others with love and understanding. Amen.
